The Many Uses Of Hedging Plants

For a far more economical , natural alternative you could consider using hedging plants. Hedging plants, once established are extremely effective for providing a windbreak, privacy, or security for your home. Plants can also be used effectively to disguise ugly views or areas you do not want to overlook.
Natural planting is far more appealing to look at than a fence.
Many different plants can be utilised to form an excellent hedge. Choose evergreen shrubs that are native to your property as these will have the best chance of being resistant to local weather conditions. Popular plants for creating a hedge include yew, privet, boxwood, laurel and lastly photinia, although this list is not exhaustive.
Native to Britain and a popular choice for boxed hedges and topiary’s is the yew which is a very easy plant to clip. This plant can be grown just about anywhere which has good soil drainage.
Among the toughest shrubs is privet. This is a rapid growing shrub which can thrive in poor quality soil if necessary. Thorough preparation of your planting area before you begin will give your plants the best start.
Boxwood will have pretty little\attractive blooms during the spring and is the best choice for shady areas. It is a hardy plant which will continue to grow for a number of years. It is however a slow growing shrub.
For a substantial windbreak, laurel is a good choice as it grows up to fifteen feet tall.
Photinia grows to a a great height, providing a impenetrable barrier with leaves that turn from red to green at the end of spring.
Smaller shrubs are a handy choice for a small budget but they will take a while to establish. Larger plants can be used to obtain a practically immediate hedge.
It will also help you to cut costs if you can put the plants in yourself instead of getting a professional to do it. It is a fairly straightforward task to carry out, although it is time consuming and you will need to be strong enough to dig an adequate sized trench for planting. Don’t forget to water new plants frequently to start with to avoid losing any.
A combination of different plants can be planted together for a more natural effect. Hedging shrubs are a great low cost solution.
