When planting a plant for your boundary, your best option may well be to use evergreens because of their excellent year round cover.
They may cost a little bit more than other options but they are definitely worth it.
You will gain many benefits by using evergreen varieties. Evergreens are very effective for creating privacy screening and disguising unsightly features, as well as being capable of reducing unwanted effects caused by pollution.
There are numerous fantastic evergreen plants to choose from, so you should be able to easily find a selection of plants that you love to suit your project. There is no need to stick to one type, as you will create a more attractive border by varying its tones and textures.
Two of the most popular choices for a great looking evergreen border are Yew and Cherry Laurel.
Yew (Taxus baccata) is a classic choice in the UK, possibly because it likes quite a lot of water! This deep green plant has additional interest in the autumn when it produces red berries. Yew is a hardy evergreen that is reasonably straightforward to grow in practically any soil type with good drainage. In correctly prepared soil, you can achieve growth of up to 30 centimetres per year.
Laurel is known for its large glossy leaves. The laurel is also very hardy with vigorous growth of between 30 to 60 centimetres a year. In addition to its lovely autumn berries, it also produces white flowers in spring. You can grow Laurel successfully practically anywhere you like. Both Yew and Cherry Laurel should be trimmed once a year in spring to maintain their shape.
Individuals wanting something less ordinary might like to try a variety of Bamboo, or Escallonia. Bamboo is becoming more popular in many garden designs and creates a slightly more unusual, exotic appearance. The low maintainance required to look after Bamboo has made it a very popular plant. There are a number of great looking varieties to choose from and once established they provide a very striking, unique boundary. It is vital to note that you must take great care when planting Bamboo, to ensure it will not become problematic, as it is known to in some cases become invasive if not controlled. There are several different colours of Bamboo to choose from.
For a great burst of colour you could opt for Escallonia which is covered in red flowers from June through to October. It can grow up to 45 centimetres a year and is a great choice of evergreen with small, dark green foliage.
